Whistler Interpretive Forest: Mountain Biker’s Heaven

I recently returned from a trip to Whistler, Canada where I spent a week exploring the dirt trails on my mountain bike. This is home of serious mountain biking. I was prepared to get dirty and hoping to acquire a few “war wounds” along the way to prove my worthiness.

What I did get was an amazing insight to the lush landscapes and hardcore trails of Whistler. My riding companions were lucky (or unlucky?) enough to experience a black bear, up close & personal. No harm given or received! And no, they didn’t stick around to “feed the bear”.

Urban Graffiti

Today was full of inspiration. Spent the day along Hwy 30, taking photos of trains & graffiti.

Marian Bantjes

I just discovered this amazing graphic designer & typographer - Marian Bantjes. Her work is so precise, yet organic at the same time. She’ll be speaking at TypeCon Aug 1–5, in Seattle. She’s featured in the July 2007 CA Illustration Annual. Good interview & write up.

New Inspiration

The BIG 30 is rapidly approaching - July 29th to be exact. For the most part, I’m super excited. I’ve accomplished so much in a short amount of time. In the past couple of years, I’ve really grown into my own skin and damn it, it feels good.

I got an interesting envelope in the mail today from a sender I didn’t recognize. A birthday gift from my sister, sent to me by an artist by the name of Kristin Brenneman. It’ an original painting, oil on canvas, titled “Swooping glints, across noon and after“. WOW! This has to be the best birthday gift I’ve ever received. Kristin does some amazing work; ranging painting to sculpture to jewelry and also teaches workshops.

Um, yeah…I like books

On our last day in Miami Beach, we visited the Wolfsonian Museum (also known as Florida International University). They had an amazing collection of design books, ranging from architecture, to graphic design & film. We picked up The Design of Dissent by Milton Glaser and Mirko Ilic. Powerful stuff. We could’ve spent the entire day inside their cafe drinking espresso & reading books. Ah, we’re such goobers for good design…

Huh

Art Deco Galore

I was the ultimate tourist today. Camera in hand, I toured the Art Deco district of Miami Beach Florida. A lot of the smaller hotels looked to be in their original state. Not bad, considering some of them date back to the 1920’s. Each building had a unique style, showcasing the Art Deco architecture with long, thin forms and geometric shapes & patterns. I loved that the old buildings were either a stark white or a crazy intense color that screamed “look at me!”

The biggest allure for me was the typography - very stylized, but clean at the same time.

World Erotic Art Museum

A few years ago I visited the erotic museum in Spain and was totally blown away. While vacationing in Miami Beach Florida, I came across the World Erotic Art Museum www.weam.com. I didn’t think this one could top it. Boy, was I wrong!
They had over 12,000 sq ft of art, ranging from paintings in different mediums, to sculptures to wine bottle openers that had naked men carved into the handle. It’s a toss-up between my personal fav’s…the old school “pleasure chaise lounge” made specifically for women. It dated back to the early 1900’s. And the hand carved “pleasure instruments” (aka beautifully carved dildos) from Japan that dated back to the late 1800’s. I know people have been enjoying these naughty pleasures for years, but didn’t realize so many cultures expressed their sexuality in these art forms. Dildos dating back to the late 1800’s…who knew?
